Would I be a good applicant for the Gallagher Scholar program?

How many scholarships do you award each year?

We typically select five candidates per country.

Do I have to be a Mexican, South African or Turkish Citizen to apply for a scholarship?

Yes, all applicants must be citizens of either Mexico, South Africa or Turkey and plan to spend their working careers in their home country.  

Can I use the scholarship at any University?

No, all of our Scholars in Mexico attend ITESM - Monterrey Campus, in South Africa Gallagher Scholars attend University of Cape Town, and in Turkey they all attend Boğaziçi University. 

Can I apply for the scholarship if I am not entering my first year at University?

No, we only accept applicants who are entering their first year at University.

What does the scholarship pay for?

  • Tuition
  • Books and supplies for Scholars
  • Room and Board for eligible Scholars

  • Transportation for eligible Scholars

Do I have to be in a specific major field of study/faculty to apply for a Gallagher Foundation scholarship?

Yes, the Gallagher Foundation provides scholarships to Scholars with academic majors including architecture, business, education, engineering, history, language, law, math, medicine (in South Africa), philosophy, political science, psychology, science or technology. 

Having reviewed a large number of applications, we offer you the following words of advice to consider while completing your application:

  • Don’t use abbreviations or slang in your answers.
  • Typed applications are strongly preferred. 
  • Proofread your essays before you submit your application.
  • Use the essays to tell the rest of the story that the other application questions don’t cover.
  • Choose someone to write your letter of recommendation that will be able to answer questions about you from a personal and academic perspective.

Who should complete my letter of recommendation?

Your letter of recommendation should be submitted by someone who can provide information about your character, academic accomplishments, community service involvement and extracurricular activities. Possible recommenders to consider are a teacher, guidance counselor, athletic coach, mentor, or employer. It is important that applicants select letter writers who will take the time to highlight what makes you unique. Letters of recommendation from family members are not accepted.

If selected as a Gallagher Scholar, is there a minimum Grade Point Average requirement while at the University?

  • In Mexico, the grade point average minimum is 88%
  • In South Africa, the grade point average minimum is 60% 
  • In Turkey, the grade point average minimum is 2.5 

If selected as a Gallagher Scholar do I have to attend the Scholar gatherings and participate in the Scholar community?

Yes, an important aspect of the Gallagher Foundation scholarship is the Scholar community.  While at University you will get to know other current Gallagher Scholars and graduated Scholars.
