We’ve answered the most commonly asked questions about the Gallagher Foundation and the scholarship application process.

The Gallagher Foundation provides fully funded undergraduate scholarships for university scholars with economic need in Mexico at ITESM - Tecnológico de Monterrey and South Africa at the University of Cape Town. The Gallagher Foundation provides a community of support and leadership development to scholars during their university experience.

Candidates must be:

  • Accepted into:
    • Mexico - a four-year program at ITESM Monterrey
    • South Africa - a four-year degree or 6 year medical degree program at UCT
  • Entering the first year of undergraduate study
  • A citizen of Mexico or South Africa
  • Driven by a vision to improve their country
  • Committed to academic excellence and ethical behavior

  • Financial: The Gallagher Foundation scholarship is a full scholarship covering:
    • Tuition
    • Accommodations
    • Meals
    • Spending allowance
    • Books and supplies
    • Laptop
    • Travel stipend
  • Academic: The Gallagher Foundation supports our scholars through regular check-ins with the Country Director and referrals to academic support if or when needed. Buddy Scholars and Gallagher Mentors also provide support to our scholars during their university career.
  • Wellness: The health and wellness of our scholars is very important to the Gallagher Foundation. The Gallagher Foundation provides a mental health program which includes regular check-ins from the Country Director, group wellness coaching each semester, and private counseling for scholars who need additional mental health support.
  • Career: The Gallagher Foundation supports our scholars both before and after they graduate, connecting them with the resources they need to help them succeed, and connection with a community of graduated scholars to support them after graduation.
  • Leadership Development: From the moment they enter the program and throughout their post-graduate years, scholars are provided leadership development through small gatherings, leadership summits, mentoring relationships and other opportunities.

No, all of our scholars in Mexico attend ITESM - Monterrey Campus and in South Africa, Gallagher Scholars attend University of Cape Town.

No, we only accept applicants entering their first year at university.

Yes, all applicants must be citizens of either Mexico or South Africa to apply to the program in that country.

  • Applicants for the Gallagher program in Mexico may select the option at the beginning of the application to translate the application into Spanish and may complete the application in Spanish.
  • The application for the program in South Africa is available only in English.
  • Maintain a minimum grade point average determined by each program:
    • South Africa - 55% in the first year and 60% each year there after
    • Mexico - 88% each year
  • Graduate in four years (or 6 years for medical programs), unless otherwise approved 
  • Maintain ethical behavior
  • Attend all required Gallagher Scholar events

South Africa Only

NSFAS funding does cover tuition, accommodations and meals for financially eligible students, but the Gallagher Foundation provides additional financial support for our scholars including a spending allowance, books and supplies, a laptop and funding for travel home. Additionally, Gallagher Scholars join a community which provides community, leadership development and academic, wellness and career support.

The Foundation and UCT Financial Aid office will work with those selected as Gallagher Scholars to communicate their change in funding status to NSFAS.
