Eligibility Requirements in South Africa
Gallagher Scholar candidates are citizens of South Africa who reflect academic achievement and evidence of leadership potential. Race, gender, and religion are not considered as factors in scholarship selection. Individuals selected as candidates for the Gallagher Scholarship meet the following criteria:
Gallagher Scholar candidates show evidence of a high level of ethical values, which include:
- Belief that progress can be achieved without violence
- Commitment to making a difference in their country
- Traits which align with the Gallagher Foundation Traits of Distinguished Leaders
Gallagher Scholar candidates possess and show evidence of academic excellence.
Gallagher Scholar candidates must be:
- Entering their first year of university studies in 2026.
- Entering a degree program lasting a maximum of 4 years or a 6 year medical degree program.
Final selection into the Gallagher Foundation Scholarship program is dependent upon final acceptance to the University of Cape Town.
Gallagher Scholar candidates display evidence of leadership potential through their involvement in leadership activities including, but not limited to:
- Special projects
- Awards received
- Extracurricular activities
- Service work
Gallagher Scholar candidates come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds displaying evidence of financial need.
The Gallagher Foundation scholarship application includes four short essay questions and requires the following document uploads:
- Letter of Reference
- High School Results
- Proof of Income

The Gallagher Foundation application for the 2026 scholar cohort is now closed. The timeline for the 2027 scholar cohort application process will be posted here in May 2026.
