Eligibility Requirements in South Africa
Gallagher Scholar candidates are citizens of South Africa who reflect academic achievement and evidence of leadership potential. Race, gender, and religion are not considered as factors in scholarship selection. Individuals selected as candidates for the Gallagher Scholarship meet the following criteria:
Gallagher Scholar candidates show evidence of a high level of ethical values, which include:
- Belief that progress can be achieved without violence
- Commitment to making a difference in their country
- Traits which align with the Gallagher Foundation Traits of Distinguished Leaders
Gallagher Scholar candidates possess and show evidence of unusual intelligence and ability:
- Admitted to UCT with final acceptance received
- Admitted into a 4 year (or 6 year medical) program
- Academic excellence shown on the National Benchmark test in all competency areas
Gallagher Scholar candidates display evidence of leadership potential in their involvement in leadership activities including, but not limited to:
- Special projects
- Awards received
- Extracurricular activities
- Service work
Gallagher Scholar candidates come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds displaying evidence of financial need.
This application includes four short essay questions and requires the following document uploads:
- Letter of Reference
- High School Proof of Results
- Proof of National Benchmark test scores
- Proof of Final Acceptance to UCT
- Proof of Income
Application Timeline
Gallagher Foundation 2025 South Africa application cycle timeline
- November 1, 2024: Gallagher Foundation Application Opens - application can be found by clicking on the button below
- January 31, 2025: Gallagher Foundation Application closes
- March 10, 2025: Applicants are informed of their status in the next phase of the selection process
- March 14-16, 2025: Final Gallagher Foundation candidates are interviewed
- March 19, 2025: Applicants are informed of final selection of Gallagher Scholars
